Sixteen Feet Per Second

November 11, 2012

Sixteen feet per second is

the speed that Uncle Sammy plunged

when from an Army plane he leapt

in service to his country.

.

I do not know the rate of speed

that Uncle Sammy later fell

in those autumn years he spent

inside his lonely dwelling.

.

He never wed, he lived alone,

the second floor of that old house;

the peeling paint, the piles of mail,

the Blessed Mother by his side.

.

The storm that came and caused the darkness

was the last page of his life.

The photos that we found, though, showed

his light of being once shone bright.

.

The memories therein contained

his postman days, his traveling,

and most precious of them all,

his older sister’s constant love.

.

Sixteen feet per second is

a rapid speed to fall to earth.

I wonder now about the speed

that Uncle Sammy fell from life.
